Spectrum Mourns LossesSep '06
Pilots Nathan Forrest (left) and Glenn Maben, shown after a test flight of the Spectrum 33, perished when the plane crashed during a flight in July.
The people of Spectrum Aeronautical LLC and Rocky Mountain Composites, Inc. are mourning their losses. The companies are struggling in the wake of the July 25 crash of the sole prototype of the Spectrum 33 business jet. While the loss of the $3.65 million experimental aircraft is devastating, even worse is the loss of Glenn Maben, director of flight operations for California-based Spectrum, and Nathan Forrest, vice director of flight operations.

During World War II, an elite group of young, daring female pilots became pioneers and heroes. They served diligently and proudly, ferrying and testing aircraft, towing targets and training men to fly. They sacrificed much. They were the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the first women trained to fly U.S. military aircraft. When the war was over, the government disbanded them and sent them home. In the late 1970s, the women finally received veteran status for their service.
