The Whirly-Girls who were present during the Hovering on April 29 took the opportunity to pose for a keepsake anniversary shot.
Of the 160 people who attended Whirly-Girls International’s 50th anniversary event in Washington, D.C., about half were Whirly-Girls.
The three-day event, held April 28-30, featured a dedication at the Mayflower Hotel where the first Whirly-Girls meeting took place. During an opening day reception, a permanent plaque was installed on the hotel mezzanine denoting the historical significance of the hotel to the Whirly-Girls.
The event also included a tour of the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which displayed a special exhibit featuring memorabilia of the first 118 members of the Whirly-Girls.
The nonprofit, educational and charitable organization is dedicated to advancing women in helicopter aviation. Members will be making an anniversary picture CD that will be sold on their website.
